Every year the top graduates of its dance programme have the opportunity to join Transitions, a pre-professional dance company that offers them valuable stage experience, as well as an unrivalled platform to showcase their talents.
It’s not surprising, then, that the dancers who make it into Transitions give their all in every performance - their futures may well depend on it.
Transitions Dance Company counts Sir Matthew Bourne and Luca Silvestrini among its many illustrious alumni.
The present cohort of nine dancers will perform a triple bill of works by international choreographers, that will give a measure of their versatility and ability to tackle different concepts and physical demands.
The award-winning Swedish choreographers H2DANCE follow a multidisciplinary approach to performance, that combines movement, voice and video to treat serious topics with a considerable dose of irreverent and surreal humour. Their new commission for Transitions looks into group behaviour, power balance and manipulation.
The second piece in the programme comes from Cameron McMillan, a dancer, choreographer and movement director, who’s been carving a distinctive name for himself on the world stage. McMillan’s is particularly interested in exploring communication, specifically the dynamics of choreography, and how it informs movement. It’ll be interesting to see how he develops those ideas in a piece especially created for Transitions.
The final piece comes from the Italian choreographer Elisa Pagani. She, too, is interested in human relationships, and she creates works of intense physicality.
The new Transitions programme comes to Laban in June, following a nationwide tour.
