The gala is being held as part of the British-Spanish Society’s centenary year and recognises the cultural links between the two countries, as well as the UK’s part in offering international artists opportunities to grow creatively and professionally.
It also comes hot on the heels of the recent nominations for the 2015 UK National Dance Awards, in which nine Spanish dancers and choreographers were selected.
Three of these artists will appear at the gala.
The Royal Ballet principal dancer, Laura Morera - from Madrid - was nominated for Outstanding Female Performance in a Classical Role. She will dance a duet from Liam Scarlett’s Viscera with The Royal Ballet’s Ricardo Cervera - from Malaga.
Choreographer Avatâra Ayuso – from Mallorca - has been nominated in the Emerging Artist category, as has Carlos Pons Guerra, a choreographer born in Gran Canaria who is director of DeNada Dance Theatre.
Both dance-makers will present work during the evening. Ayuso has created a new duet for AVA Dance Company which will have its world premiere at the gala. Meanwhile, Pons Guerra will bring his Young Man! a Spanish take on Roland Petit’s Le Jeune Homme et La Mort.
The programme will also feature Baltic Dance Theatre, the company of the Baltic Opera House in the Polish port of Gdansk (including five Spanish dancers) presenting the UK debut of Phaedre by Izadora Weiss; and the world premiere of Ukok, a new solo choreographed and performed by former Rambert dancer Estela Merlos (from Barcelona).
A short dance film directed by Avatâra Ayuso, Tokyo Tokyo, will be played and there will also be interval performances of Flamenco and Mexican music by The Bordoneo Duo.
Tamara Rojo, Spanish prima ballerina and artistic director of English National Ballet, will be the gala patron.
The evening begins with a reception at 7pm before the 8pm performance and a post-performance reception will even give lucky audience members the chance to meet the dancers and choreographers!
Tickets are £32 for members and £39 for non-members; patrons can join on the night to enjoy the members discount.
