Three great works of the twentieth century, two outstanding musicians and one internationally-acclaimed ensemble. The second concert in honour of conductor Michael Tilson Thomas’s 70th birthday is certainly an appropriate way to celebrate! The musicians brought together for this concert are those with whom he has frequently collaborated, and the vivid works on the programme suit Tilson Thomas’s charismatic interpretations perfectly: this will be an occasion that you won’t want to miss.
Benjamin Britten’s Four Sea Interludes convey the changing moods of the Suffolk coast, depicting a peaceful dawn, a still night and a frenzied storm. Shostakovich’s First Piano Concerto draws from a bolder palette of orchestral colours: pitting the piano soloist against impudent trumpet statements, this playful work is full of wit. Finally, Jean Sibelius’s Second Symphony provides a grand finale: after a lilting pastoral first movement, a somber processional, and a propulsive dance, the work eventually finds a triumphant conclusion with uplifting fanfares.
Known for her astounding virtuosity and captivating interpretations Yuja Wang’s dazzling playing has thrilled critics and audiences alike. She is joined by the London Symphony Orchestra, considered one of the world’s top ensembles and held in high regard for their slick and polished performances.
Tilson Thomas’s milestone birthday is certainly being marked with a suitably impressive event. Don’t miss out on the chance to hear some first-class musicians give unforgettable performances of twentieth-century classics.
