Now in his third season as Musical Director of the Academy of St Martin in the Fields, the celebrated American violinist Joshua Bell has put together two baroque Bach violin concertos, followed by Beethoven’s big Eroica Symphony.
Bell is often referred to as “the poet of the violin” and has a charismatic stage presence. He is the first person to hold the title of Musical Director of the Academy of St Martin in the Fields since British composer Sir Neville Marriner formed the orchestra in 1958. To celebrate Marriner’s 90th birthday, he has decided to culminate this season with a performance of his work.
His concerts with the Academy of St Martin in the Fields are, he says, “the highlight of my year…the most meaningful musical experiences I have.” There are, however, only two in which he is performing in this season’s programme. For the double concerto he plays alongside the talented Indian violinist Harvey de Souza for the double concerto. De Souza began studying music aged four under the tutelage of his father. He won a scholarship to the Yehudi Menuhin School, studying with Menuhuin himself. The energy between him and the Grammy award-winning Bell makes this one fun to watch.
