It is worth going along to this concert just to see the array of authentic period instruments, from the baroque harp and theorbo, to the harpsichord, viol and lirone. Poeticall Musicke is one of the few ensembles to boast such a collection, and the early music they play is beautiful.
For this little delight, they are promising seasonal favourites and rarities to get you in a festive mood, including works from the composers, Marc-Antoine Charpentier and Henry Purcell. Poeticall Musicke only formed a couple of years ago and is already the resident band at St James’ church, in Islington, where they will be performing this concert.
It may be a baroque ensemble, but there is nothing old-fashioned about this group when it comes to circulating its music. It has embraced the world of internet streaming through its own record label, Veterum Musica, and attracted a large online following, with more than 30,000 plays on six albums. Poeticall Musicke could well be the old music group of the future.
