For four centuries the city of Vienna was at the heart of a creativity and discernment that infused the many countries touched by the Austro-Hungarian empire. Art, literature and music were enriched by this crucible of originality, and the legacy for concert and opera goers is immense: Haydn, Mozart, Schubert, Brahms, Dvorak, Smetana, Mahler...the roll call of composers influenced by or active in Vienna is a mighty one. Wigmore Hall's chamber ensemble in residence, the Nash Ensemble, revisit Vienna in a series of 10 concerts from 22 Oct to 21 Mar 2017, with guest soloists including the sopranos Lucy Crowe and Claire Booth. The series concludes with Nash Inventions, when composers paying tribute to the Viennese tradition include Sir Peter Maxwell Davies and Julian Anderson.
