The brilliant young British composer Charlotte Bray is so shocked by the partial destruction of the historic archaeological site of Palmyra in Syria that she has reacted in music with her new work, Falling in the Fire. A Proms commission, it is given its world premiere by the BBC Symphony Orchestra under Sakari Oramo, with cello soloist Guy Johnston.

The concert also includes Haydn’s Symphony No 34, being given its first Proms performance, more than 250 years after its composition, and Mahler’s Symphony No 5, his love letter Alma Schindler, whose own career as a composer was cut short by their marriage.
