Based on the experiences of Red Cross doctor Madeleine Pauliac, The Innocents dramatises the real-life story of a French convent that has to deal with seven pregnancies in the aftermath of WWII.
Director Anne Fontaine's sombre-paletted tale of shame and religion looks like quite a step away from the likes of Coco Before Chanel and Gemma Bovary, two of her previous films, but by all accounts she has handled the tonal shift with aplomb and subtlety.
