Constantly pursued and persecuted by the repressive Belorussian government, led by president Alexander Lukashenko, the Belarus Free Theatre troupe uses drama to protest, including critical examinations of such topics as sexual orientation, alcoholism, suicide and politics, all fobidden by the authorities. With protest movements in full swing in Belarus' neighbour countries - from the  Euromaidan  in Kiev to  Russia's punk band  Pussy Riot - there's rarely been a more pressing time to study the on-the-ground responses to Europe's only remaining dictatorship.

Smuggled out of the country, the Belarus Free Theatre have travelled the world, where they have produced widely acclaimed productions in exile.  At huge risk to their own safety, they've given candid interviews to director Madelein Sackler about a country choked by oppression and repression.
