Exactly a decade after Zach Braff of Scrubs fame premiered his indie hit Garden State, the writer-director-producer returns with the much anticipated film Wish I Was Here. Backed in part by a controversial $3 million Kickstarter campaign, the film received largely favourable reviews at Sundance earlier this year.
Wish I Was Here follows the mid-life crisis of a struggling 35-year old failed actor – whose last role was ‘the before guy’ in a dandruff commercial – now confronted with his father’s illness and the prospect of pulling his children out of their Jewish private school. Taking a light-hearted look at serious issues, the film has been dubbed a Garden State for an older generation. A love-or-hate kinda guy, Braff continues to either amuse long-standing fans or further fuel haters’ anger in this tragicomedy of big questions mixed with first world problems.
