New cinema releases 2015: Aloha, Cameron Crowe (Almost Famous)
Promising romantic comedies don’t come around very often. In fact, other than Silver Linings Playbook, (2012), Enough Said (2013) and 2013-hit Her (which we’re not sure even counts) we can’t think of many worth watching from the last few years.
So you can imagine the initial excitement that the trailer for upcoming Aloha, written and directed by the Oscar-winning Cameron Crowe (Almost Famous, Jerry Maguire, Say Anything) and starring Hollywood heavyweight Bradley Cooper (American Sniper) looked very promising indeed: but early reviews have been less than enthused.
Emma Stone: New film with Bradley Cooper
Shot by Eric Gautier (Into the Wild, The Motorcycle Diaries) and featuring a promising cast including Emma Stone (Birdman, The Help) beside the liikes of Rachel McAdams, Bill Murray, John Krasinski and Alec Baldwin, Aloha is set in Hawaii, following disgraced and unpopular US weapons consultant Brian Gilcrest (played by Cooper) from his deployment to a dormant military base to supervising the launch of an advanced spy satellite.
Comedy drama film: Aloha
Once there, Gilcrest must secure the blessings of the native Hawaiian council, whilst also dealing with the repercussions of re-connecting with his former great love Tracy (McAdams) as well as the unexpected feelings he’s forming for the hard-charging Air Force Watchdog Major Lisa Ng (Stone) assigned to him.
Cameron Crowe movies
Cameron Crowe films are often hit and miss: hasn’t brought us anything since the ill-fated We Bought a Zoo in 2011 (and before that, Elizabethtown (2005) wasn’t much better) but we were still hoping for great things from the master of old-fashioned rom-coms. Current movie reviews for Aloha have been particularly unforgiving in the states – we're intrigued to see what the UK box office makes of it. Hopes, sadly, aren't high.
Aloha UK release date
Aloha is scheduled for release in UK cinemas 18 September.
