Elliot Smith was among the most important confessional songwriters of his generation. An gifted musician, his delicate guitar playing found perfect equivalence in the candour and intelligence of his lyricism.
At once vulnerable and assured, Smith’s music was deeply personal, exploring, amongst other subjects, his struggle with depression and drug addiction. After his untimely passing in 2003, his acoustic compositions have only continued to captivate listeners.
Heaven Adores You: director Nikolai Rossi
Shot across Portland, New York, and Los Angeles – the three cities which Smith called home – director Nikolai Rossi’s Heaven Adores You takes an intimate look at the artist’s troubled life. Interweaving live performances, recorded conversations with Smith, and interviews with those who knew him best, the film pays poignant tribute to a talented but troubled musician.
Smith's family and close circle of friends are among those who appear in Rossi's documentary. Sound-tracked by music from each stage of Smith’s career, Heaven Adores You was warmly received when it premiered at 2014’s San Francisco International Film Festival.
