The Barbican’s This Made Me Laugh festival kicks off on 10 April. Curated by a range of comedians, writers and producers, the programme offers a variety of old favourites and cult classics: perfect films for the start of spring full of verve, wit and inventiveness.
The festival begins with a surreal amble through the old west in the Coen Brothers’ True Grit. Based on the Charles Portis novel of the same name, it’s not the only western on the programme. The 11th sees the screening of Blazing Saddles: one of Mel Brooks’ most enduring films which skewers bigotry in the director’s distinctive offbeat style, chosen by Lenny Henry.
Highlights thereafter include Rob Reiner’s This is Spinal Tap(12th), often considered the original mockumentary, and Woody Allen’s uproarious Bullets Over Broadway (13th) which sees an aspiring playwright negotiate world of organised crime.
The festival closes on April 16 with an undeniable classic of American cinema: Mike Nichols’ The Graduate. A landmark film, it’s as poignant as it is funny.
