New movie, Cake, starring Jennifer Aniston
Jennifer Aniston has had a few chances to slough off her rom-com skin and “go serious” – notably in 2002’s The Good Girl – yet despite some strong performances in this department, she continues to be typecast as the sassy Rachel character. Could Cake be the turning point? Initial reviews of the film, in which Aniston plays a woman suffering from chronic pain, have singled her out for praise. Awards have followed, though she’s been snubbed by the Academy. Patrick Tobin’s script, which mixes gallows humour with serious considerations of the fallout from chronic pain, should offer the actress the room to exercise her considerable comic chops while extending her dramatic range. Whether the rest of the film holds up remains to be seen. Cake film UK release date 20th February
