The time for films al fresco is officially here, with Roof Top Cinema returning to Shoreditch hot-spot the Golden Bee. This season offers unabashedly popular fare under the stars: for its short run, this will be up there among of East London's best cinemas.
'What about hypothermia' we hear you cry? Well you can stop your pre-emptive shivering, as the spot in question is in fact a luxurious heated roof terrace, offering expertly made cocktails to put a roaring fire in your belly. The films presented were voted for by fans of the bar's Roof Top season, and are thus a refreshingly honest selection of widely enjoyed blockbusters. If you're in the market for obscure indie fare, you're barking up the wrong tree, though the surrounding Shoreditch area provides a veritable forest of outdoor events for cinephiles come summer.
Here, we start with LA's answer to Cinderella, Pretty Woman, starring Richard Gere and queen of smiles Julia Roberts. Then on Wednesday 4th February get lost in Vegas with the riotous bromance comedy The Hangover, a monster hit that made a star of Bradley Cooper (watch out for the bizarrely brilliant Mike Tyson cameo). The following Wednesday, adrenaline junkies unite for Fast and Furious the fourth in the wildly popular auto-action series starring the late Paul Walker. Or for more romantic fare, February 18th's Valentine's special is classic tearjerker The Notebook, saved from soppiness by its charismatic leads Ryan Gosling and Rachel Mcadams. Finally, jazz hands at the ready for the season's closing number, Chicago, boasting Broadway hits, sly wit and an Oscar winning turn from Catherine Zeta-Jones as the murderous Velma Kelly.
Unusually for outdoor events, ticket prices remain in the range of your average cinema trip, and better yet, include bottomless popcorn (which some would say is worth the journey alone). Whatever your pick, treat yourself to an evening of unadulterated entertainment in a unique and buzzing atmosphere.
