Celebrated French director Philippe Garrel’s latest film, Jealousy, tops a season of the great auteur’s most emotionally powerful and autobiographical films at Cine Lumiere.
An award-winning filmmaker whose works have brought him frequent accolades at the Cannes and Venice film festivals, Philippe Garrel’s latest work features an engaging performance from his son Louis.
Jealousy tells the story of an actor struggling to get by who leaves his girlfriend and daughter to live with another woman- also striving in vain for stage stardom. Both actors strain to make enough money to survive in Paris, and the film probes how the tensions between the younger Garrel’s character and the three women in his life affect their relationships.
A downbeat tale of the struggle between the nobility of the artist and the stability of mundane family life, the film features another brooding turn from Louis Garrel- who first gained international recognition in Bernardo Bertolucci’s 2002 film The Dreamers.
Cinematographer Willy Kurant- who has worked with one of Garrel’s key influences, Jean-Luc Godard- uses stark black and white to add a dash of elegant timelessness to the Paris conjured in Jealousy.
The Philippe Garrel season will run form July 6 to July 31, and showing alongside his latest film are three of the director’s classic works: La Cicatrice Interieure, Les Baisers de Secours and J’Entends Plus La Guitare.
Among the awards that Philippe Garrel has won include a Jean Prix Vigo in 1983, the Perspectives du Cinéma Award at the 1984 Cannes Film Festival and two Silver Lion awards at the Venice Film Festival.
Cine Lumiere has cherry-picked some of the highlights of the acclaimed director’s career for you to enjoy this summer.
