There’s to be much throwing about of brains at the Bloomsbury Theatre this April. Funny Brains, that is. Britain’s most universally acclaimed stand-up comedian Stewart Lee is hosting a star-studded comedy benefit in aid of Glioblastoma brain tumour research featuring some of the sharpest minds and wits on the circuit today.
Known for cerebral, politically loaded performances executed with deft verbal swordsmanship, Lee is one of the most respected voices in British stand-up. Joining him in this mixed bill will be an A-list lineup of the most exciting neo-alternative comics on the circuit, including self-avowed comedian of the German fatherland Henning Wehn, surreal genius Simon Munnery, 2013 Edinburgh Comedy Award winner Bridget Christie, prolific sketch actor Kevin Eldon, and award-winning stand-up and former science teacher to Dizzee Rascal, Shazia Mirza.
It’s rare to see such a cluster of comedy’s most innovative, intelligent acts on one bill, and the kind of feat that only someone of Lee’s stature could pull off. Every single name on the lineup has achieved the kind of broadsheet and industry acclaim of which most acts can only dream.
But we’re particularly excited to see rare live stand-up from the inordinately talented Kevin Eldon - the most prolific comedian that only comedy aficionados tend to know by name. If you’re a sitcom fan we can all but guarantee he’s had a part in some of your favourite TV shows, and his own star-cameo-encrusted BBC sketch show It’s Kevin aired to huge and deserved acclaim on BBC2 last year.
If there’s one show this Spring we can guarantee will sell out in a flash, it’s this one. We can’t recommend it enough.
