Sony Award-winning comedian Isy Suttie, star of Channel 4’s Peep Show, performs three work-in-progress shows this January at the Leicester Square Theatre's intimate Lounge space. She’s trying out new material for the second series of her acclaimed BBC Radio 4 series Isy Suttie’s Love Letters , and this is your chance to hear it first.
Love Letters is a part musical, part confessional anthology of stories from the lives of people Suttie has known: from Bob, a driving instructor, and his quiet affection for a girl he’s never spoken to, to the silent heartache of the busker Suttie passes every day.
Interwoven with memories of the small Derbyshire town she grew up in, there’s a real warmth in Suttie’s storytelling that it’s difficult not to get lost in. Each line is delivered with such a beautiful weighting of words that they could well be poems – or love letters - in themselves.
She’s best known for her acting work, and as such the quality of her musical comedy has been unfairly overlooked. She first started writing songs on her guitar at age 12, and builds whimsical acoustic numbers into her performances that accentuate their light and shade. Her writing career also extends far beyond the auspices of Peep Show. She was ‘comedy advisor’ (writer, to you and me) on Channel 4’s teen drama Skins – credited as ‘comedy advisor’, and earlier this year featured in Comedy Central’s acclaimed Alternative Comedy Experience, a TV showcase curated by the godfather of modern Alternative Comedy Stewart Lee.
This is a great chance to see a beautifully crafted show taking shape. Don’t miss it in this intimate venue.
