Menopause support: the conversations, the app and advice you need now

Tuesday 18 October marks World Menopause Day, and here is the best in online events, apps and the conversation starters for menopause support

Menopause Support & World Menopause Day 2022
Tuesday 18 October marks World Menopause Day; along with the myriad of symptom discussions and chatter, it also highlights the misinformation and misdiagnosis that women and non-binary people might encounter. It's time to take action and join the menopause movement.

Although menopause begins, on average, at the age of 51, the symptoms can strike much earlier. Dr Louise Newson, a menopause specialist in the UK, admitted: 'As a menopause specialist and a GP, I didn't recognise or diagnose my menopause symptoms' – despite seeing 1,500 women a month at her private menopause clinic.
To try and help women and their doctors join the dots, she has launched an App called Balance. Often menopause symptoms can be amorphous – such as low mood, depression, migraines, hot flushes, and sleeplessness. Too often, women and GPs don't piece the jigsaw together. Misdiagnosis is endemic. The television presenter, Davina McCall, has been championing better menopause support care. She says: 'A staggering two-thirds of women are given anti-depressants rather than the HRT they need when they go to their doctor.' She's teamed up with menopause specialist, Dr Naomi Potter. Check out Dr Potter's online platform here.

You can access Dr Potter's clinic here – with appointments in London, the north of England and also virtual online consultations. You can expect a detailed consultation where the team addresses all concerns in a warm and supportive environment, formulates an action plan with a tailored approach to lifestyle and, when appropriate, organises tests and medication. All communication can be linked to your GP, and care packages can be sent directly to your home. Follow-up appointments are scheduled to make any adjustments and ensure you are on the right path.

Menopause online panel event

NOON: how do we make menopause more inclusive?

When: Monday 17 October | 6:15pm

The event is hosted by Noon founder Eleanor Mills and features a panel of fabulously formidable women. Expect to see the likes of award-winning journalists and producers like Yasmin Alibhai-Brown, Kate Muir and Jennifer Howze, along with Carolyn Harris MP, community activist and menopause campaigner Anita Powell, and Andres Berchowitz. Andrea's 2021 TED Talk on the links between menopause and gender inequity in the workplace has had over 1.6 million views.
