Yayoi Kusama exhibition, Victoria Miro
Latest sculptures and paintings in Yayoi Kusama's My Eternal Soul series to go on display a Victoria Miro
Since 2009 Kusama has been working on a series titled My Eternal Soul, a project that has seen her create a vast array of joyfully bold sculptures and canvases. On 4 June Victoria Miro will unveil the latest of these works in an exhibition that will span not only three galleries, but three continents. On 17 June David Zwirner in New York will open a compliment show and on 19 June Ota Fine Arts in Tokyo will open its own exhibition of Kusama's latest works.
The 92-year-old artist is well known for covering her sculptures, paintings - even entire rooms - with polka dots. And her output is prolific. For Kusama, who had a troubled childhood and has suffered from hallucinations for most of her life, art was an act of healing and rebellion. In a recent poem written in response to the pandemic, she wrote: ‘In the midst of this historic menace, a brief burst of light points to the future. Let us joyfully sing this song of a splendid future. Let’s go ...’
The works going on display at Victoria Miro in London this June will be covered in a riot of coloured dots, faces, eyes and amorphous shapes. In these times of uncertainty and change, it is easier to understand the healing power of colour and repetition. Kusama’s art provides an inspiring note of defiance and continuity when we need it most.
If you are a Kusama fan, look out for the opening of her Infinity Mirror Rooms at Tate Modern this spring. Dates to be announced.
