Park Seo-Bo, White Cube Mason's Yard
Exquisite abstraction and eastern simplicity over at the White Cube from Korean artist Park Seo-Bo, curated by Katharine Kostyál
Park Seo-Bo is one of the most influential artists in Korean history. His exquisite work uses traditional Korean paper, marked with rune-like shapes and gestures. Park's quiet, introspective works recall Eastern calligraphy, and are steeped in Tao and Buddhist philosophy. Attempting to fuse image, material and thought, Park's drawings speak of a calm devotion. ‘Art is no longer an act of fulfilment, but an act of emptying,’ Park says.
This year, White Cube Mason's Yard presents its second solo show of his work. This exhibition focuses on one particular group of works, informally referred to as the ‘zigzag’ paintings. These paintings, on traditional Mulberry bark paper, are repetitively painted lines, which together give the impression of the furrows of a ploughed field or undulating lines in the sand.
Serene, meditative, but never dull - come and drink in these works this winter.
