This summer, the Serpentine Sackler Gallery presents the work of Turner-Prize winning German artist Tomma Abts in her first UK solo exhibition to date. Best known for her colourful geometric patterns, mesmerising illusions in oil and acrylic and her 48cm x 38cm format, Abts' style has evolved little over the two decades she has been working. Her audacious experiments with colour, form and shape have earned her international success and the reputation as one of the most celebrated artist's of her generation.

Abt's creative process is as intriguing as her final work: ‘It is a completely open process, starting from a point of nothing, with no guaranteed outcome, every single time. I am not making process painting; the process is always directed at the final image, and the precise definition of it’ explains Abts. When she begins her work it is the gradual unfolding of forms which inform her next step and the colour palette which sets the mood and acts as a fundamental structural component to the composition.

A survey of creations from the past 10 years, this retrospective presents her bright canvases alongside casts, drawings and several works that have never been seen before.
