The Other Art Fair, Victoria House
One weekend in October sees the tale of two art fairs: one, glossy, exclusive and celebrity-populated, the other, hip, approachable and affordable. The Other Art Fair is always an exciting and relaxed alternative to Frieze, and this autumn they're back with their latest edition in Bloomsbury's Victoria House. Located just a 30 minute walk from the Frieze complex in Regent's Park, there's no reason why you can't fit both into your art calendar.
The simple concept behind The Other Art Fair is what makes it so fun: you buy art (for reasonable prices) directly from emerging artists who have been selected by a committee of art industry experts. This edition will showcase work from 120 international and local artists, allowing you to discover the next wave of talent before they get snapped up by blue-chip galleries.
As usual, the fair complements amazing art with a dynamic programme of extra features and installations. Their guest artist for this edition is punk musician and visual artist Laurie Vincent who has created a limited edition print for the event (£75, edition of 125). Visitors to the fair might also stumble upon strange life-forms created by artist Saroj Patel and a real-time data visualisation sculpture by multimedia artist Aphra Shemza which literally illuminates the effects of climate change around the world. The fair will be channeling its signature 'cool factor' with live DJ sets from Soho Radio and natural 'cidre' (not cider) served up at the bar.
It's never too early or too late to start building up your own art collection, and The Other Art Fair is the perfect place to start hunting for new treasures without the attendant hoo-ha of traditional art fairs. Even if you don't get the wallet out, you're sure to have an enriching experience browsing the wealth of artistic talent on display.
