The Other Art Fair, West Handyside Canopy
The Other Art Fair offers a hipper alternative to traditional art fairs and is back for its summer edition this July
If you love art but loathe the circus that Frieze has become, we have just the ticket for you. The Other Art fair is simple: you buy art from the emerging artists that made it. No middlemen, no pomp, no circumstance.
This summer, the Other Art Fair launches its newest fair at West Handyside Canopy for its 17th London edition, presenting a variety of hand picked works of all mediums by over 100 contemporary artists. Presented by Saatchi Art, The Other Art Fair offers new buyers and both amateur and seasoned collectors the opportunity to discover new talent at affordable prices. Chosen by a committee of art industry experts, the exhibiting artists are making waves in their field but have yet to be snapped up by blue-chip galleries.
The works span photography, painting, sculpture, video, ceramics and taxidermy, and prices start from just £50. Known for its engaging visitor experience, The Other Art Fair is certainly hip – expect appearances from a distinguished guest artist, DJ sets, immersive dining experiences, good food and 'craft' beer on site.
This year's highlights include a guest appearance from world famous light artist Chris Levine, known for his luminous portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. He's created a limited edition print especially for the fair and will be appearing in special events such as ART UPCYCLE, where visitors can book a slot to revive unwanted artwork by giving it to a creative talent to transform for just £95. Events such as these are just some of the ways that the fair is promoting sustainable art consumption this summer. In order to reduce single use plastic, they've also commissioned British artist David Shrigley to design reusable cups which will no doubt be selling like hotcakes.
Other highlights include the bright and inflatable Live for Love installation which has travelled all the way from Sydney and celebrates love for all races, genders and sexualities and One Small Step, a special exhibition commemorating the 50th anniversary of the moon landing. The exhibition will feature 12 renowned artists, including Anish Kapoor, in-line with the 12 men who have walked on the moon since 1969, who will each transform an astronaut helmet into a work of art. There will also be a stall dedicated to work by eight graduates from Central Saint Martins so that you can discover the next generation of artistic talent.
If you're struggling to navigate London's art fairs, trust us that this one is worth the hype: great art at a small price, without the industry bluster. Nothing quite beats the artist telling you about the piece themselves.
