Raoul Dufy: A Spectacle of Society, Connaught Brown

Raoul Dufy, artist of the bourgeoisie at play is coming to the Connaught Brown Gallery this Autumn

Connaught Brown Gallery: Raoul Dufy, Le casino de Nice aux deux vasques, 1930
Connaught Brown hosts the somewhat under-celebrated colourist, Raoul Dufy in this exhibition of his effervescent paintings of high society in the interwar period. This will be the second solo exhibition at the gallery.

In 1937, Dufy created the 'Electricity' mural for the Paris International Exhibition and was crowned the winner of the Venice Biennale in 1952. His work focusses on polite Parisian society, with a particular emphasis on the observation of groups, and follows in the footsteps of famous 'flâneurs' such as Charles Baudelaire and Manet. His images display a reverie for the French Riviera and a life of glamour in the Third Republic

This exhibition will go beyond the joy espoused in Dufy's resplendent and optimistic images to illuminate the subtleties in his work, and reveal truths about the fate of the classes in-between the wars.
