Elmgreen & Dragset, Self-Portraits, Victoria Miro Gallery

Long-standing collaborators Elmgreen & Dragset’s third solo art exhibition, Self-Portraits, has arrived at Victoria Miro's Mayfair gallery.

An entirely new body of work, Self-Poraits re-evaluates the significance of that most staggeringly normal of forms - the humble wall label. Dedicating an entire exhibition to this oft-overlooked gallery detail is undoubtedly a bold move. Working in a range of media from charcoal to paint on canvas, Michael Elmgreen and Ingar Dragset appropriate labels from a host of famous artists, among them David Hockney, Lynda Benglis, and Martin Kippenberger. The duo's labels are sometimes oversized, sometimes blurred, and always provocative. But for all their daring, you can't help but wonder whether the exhibition is one conceptual step too far.

Nonetheless, it remains a worthwhile addition to the ongoing conversation about the meaning of self-portraiture in a society obsessed by picture-taking and, of course, the selfie.
