REVIEW: Jamie Hewlett: The Suggestionists, Saatchi Gallery ★★★★

Jamie Hewlett Saatchi exhibition is by turns lewd, lively and lyrical

Jamie Hewlett Tarot Cards: Le Bateleur, The Magician
Jamie Hewlett, Saatchi Gallery review: Culture Whisper says ★★★★
Mischievous graphic artist Jamie Hewlett was one of the brains behind the world's first virtual pop band, Gorillaz, along with Blur's frontman Damon Albarn - best known for post-punk anthems like Clint Eastwood and DARE. Now the rebellious artist and designer, who first stormed the scene in the 1980s with the comic strip Tank Girl, has created three exhibitions at Saatchi Gallery.

The Suggestionists is Hewlett's first venture into fine art with three new bodies of quirky work on display. The Saatchi Gallery London divides up into three areas. The first hall is filled with enormous renderings of Tarot cards in a vintage palette. We loved this cartoonish yet beguiling riot of genitalia and mysticism; and you could see Hewlett's trademark touches in the faces of the Tarot characters.

The second room is not worth bothering with; through black curtains in a darkened room we're shown pornographic, dull photographs of the saucy fictional character Honey and her remarkably erect nipples.

The last section, though, was lyrical and lovely; towering illustrations of gnarled trees, like something out of a Brothers Grimm fairytale.

Cheeky and wonderfully fantastical - it's well worth dropping in.
