Hengameh Golestan, The Showroom

The legacy of so many conflicts is the destruction of cultural heritage – which makes Hengameh Golestan’s triumph as an Iranian female photographer all the more astounding. Born in Tehran in 1952 and now living in London, Golestan spent the 1970s and 1980s covertly documenting the Iranian revolution – including the street protests of March 8^th 1979 when over 100,000 women contested the compulsory hijab ruling.
Showroom exhibition
The Showroom brings together a unique presentation of Golestan’s work – still banned from exhibition in Iran – as a series of large-scale prints displayed inside the gallery and on the building’s exterior. This never-before-seen collection documents the lives of women and children, living in the midst of Tehran's enormous political and social upheaval.
This is an opportunity to grasp the practice of an extraordinary artist, silenced in her home country but internationally celebrated.
