Burden of Proof: The Construction of Visual Evidence, The Photographers’ Gallery

Explore the complex power of photographs to reveal and hide the truth at The Photographers’ Gallery's mind-bending new exhibition

Rodolphe A. Reiss, Demonstration of the Bertillon metric photography system, The Photographers' Gallery London
The Photographers’ Gallery opens the autumn season with a one-of-a-kind exhibition exploring the power of images to document acts of violence and crime.
What to expect
Presenting case studies from the dawn of photography up to the present day, this show questions the ability of photographic images to convey objective reality, and how they may construct rather than reflect the truth.
From 19th century scientific measurements of crime scenes and portraits taken of citizens sentenced to death during Stalin’s 1930s Great Purge, to satellite images of drone strikes in 2012 Pakistan, this photography exhibition in London highlights 11 case studies that discuss the ways photographs are taken and utilised in varying contexts.
Exhibition highlights
Look out for ‘The Man of the Shroud’: a series of documentary boards that recreate the historical artefacts of Jesus’s Passion and a photographic reproduction of the Shroud of Turin. This curious display gets to grips with the mystery behind the mysterious cloth that was wrapped around Jesus's body before his death.
The Photographers’ Gallery never ceases to impress with its thought-provoking exhibits, which appeal to art historians, photography lovers and the culturally curious. For something a little different this autumn, be sure not to miss this show.
