Larry Bell: 2D-3D: Glass & Vapor, White Cube Mason's Yard
White Cube Larry Bell exhibition toys with light and surface in display of new kinetic sculptures and glass cubes
This summer White Cube presents the fourth solo exhibition by Californian artist Larry Bell, who is the driving force of the “Light and Space” movement, fascinated with how geometric shapes and light affect the environment and perception of the viewer.
Larry Bell art & technique
Bell’s work focuses on the properties of light and how it interacts with different surfaces. From 1963 he has been creating glass cubes and sculptures that defy notions of gravity and mass: they either appear to float above the floor or, like in the case of Gone But Not Forgotten on show at the White Cube, appear 3D and 2D at the same time. The trick is in a process called “vacuum deposition” when glass is coated with metal films that renders it partly mirrored and partly transparent, thus allowing the light to be reflected, transmitted and absorbed simultaneously.
If this sounds way too technical and complex, don’t miss this White Cube exhibition to get to grips with Bell's early work, collages on paper and new kinetic sculptures.
