The name Imi Knoebel has remained something of a secret amongst the UK’s culture aficionados, as the artist and former student of Josef Beuys has never yet had a London solo show – until now.
Imi Knoebel exhibition
Knoebels’ prolific career of over 50 years has embraced drawing, painting, sculpture, photography and projection, but for this unique exhibition at White Cube Bermondsey the artist has conceived an entirely new work. The site-specific series Kites comprises seven large, quadrilateral paintings entirely in white, exploring Knoebel’s long-held fascination with perception and the idea of the visible within abstract painting.

The works promise to be a potent distillation of Knoebel’s recurring technique of ‘Messerschnitt’ or ‘knife cut’ compositions, which, together with his regular use of primary colours, create his distinctive practice of sparse compositions. Knoebels eschewed any supposed spirituality embedded in abstraction in favour of concrete dialogues between artist and viewer through the language of form, colour and space.
