ICA London presents rising star Eloise Hawser’s first institutional solo show with a look at the life of the cinema organ

Who is Eloise Hawser?
Graduating from the Ruskin School of Art Oxford in 2007, Eloise Hawser has fast made her mark on the contemporary scene, having exhibited at the New Museum New York, Frieze London, and earlier this year at Tate Britain.
Fascinated by the mechanical processes harnessed in creating sculptures, Hawser uses industrial methods to re-purpose functional objects to become something recognisable yet entirely dysfunctional. In her work, her father’s loafers are re-cast with elastomatic rubber and velopax developer bottles; a radiator is compressed into a sinuous mass.
ICA London exhibition
This summer, the Eloise Hawser ICA show will present a site-specific installation of new sculpture and digital video. The exhibition explores the paradox of the cinema organ which is no longer in fashion, yet whose mechanisms are more relevant than ever to the technology of today.
Hawser will illuminate the ICA’s Lower Gallery with a light installation controlled by the organ’s decorative colour changer mechanism, accompanied by a digital video work about an organ now removed from its original location. Detached from cultural consciousness, there is something mournful about this silent relic which once embodied the cinematic experience.
