Rubens, Fuseli & Turner: Renaissance and modern masters reveal their fascination with ancient sculpture at Sir John Soane's Museum exhibition
We love any excuse to visit one of our favourite small museums in London, and this new exhibition at the Sir John Soane's Museum, tucked away behind Holborn, is a perfect reason this summer.
John Soane's entire collection of ancient bric-a-brac, Roman and Greek sculptures, and breathtaking masterpieces is rooted in his Grand Tour of Europe as a young man. Focusing on the way artists, from the Renaissance to the nineteenth century, used ancient sculpture as a crucial point of reference for their art, this show boasts a pretty stellar selection of loans from leading museums in Europe and North America.
The Getty Museum, British Museum, Royal Academy and Courtauld have all thrown their hats into the ring. From Rubens' fleshy females and Fuseli's nightmarish scenes to Turner's iconic sweeping seascapes - this exhibition has a fantastic array of famous and rarely seen artworks on offer.
