James Richards selects from the V-A-C collection, Whitechapel Gallery
Turner Prize golden boy James Richards combines new installation with turbulent Francis Bacon portrait at Whitechapel Gallery exhibition
V-A-C Collection Whitechapel
The V-A-C collection is a non-profit gallery, created in Moscow in 2009. From Gerhard Richter to Wassily Kandinsky via Modigliani, the collection has amassed an impressive array of paintings, photographs and sculptures from leading Russian and international artists. Since 2014 the Whitechapel Gallery, London has been on a mission to share this exceptional collection in a series of shows.
James Richards exhibition
Now it's the turn of Turner Prize 2014 nominee James Richards to select from the stellar V-A-C Collection in a new exhibition that prizes Francis Bacon's Study for a Portrait (1953) as its centrepiece. Richards earned notoriety for his Rosebud video at the Venice Biennale where found and original footage wove a curious narrative about the act of looking. In this new show, Richards surrounds Bacon's haunting portrait of a suited man, shrouded in darkness, with a sound installation that captures moments in silence like Remembrance Sunday, mourning or the hesitation before breaking into song.
We love this show for the inventive re-imagination of one of Britain's most famous artists and the chance to get to grip with another masterpiece in the V-A-C Collection.
