David Hockney: The Arrival of Spring, Annely Juda Fine Art

Spring is in full bloom at Annely Juda where David Hockney's vibrant iPad prints are causing a stir

David Hockney artist, The Arrival of Spring in Woldgate, East Yorkshire in 2011 (twenty eleven) - 3 January (2011) iPad drawing printed on paper
You might remember the astounding David Hockney iPad drawings which caused such controversy when they went on display at the Royal Academy back in 2012, and now 16 of them will be on show at Annely Juda Fine Art. This is the second exhibition of the British art star's work to find its way to one of our favourite Mayfair galleries, and for this show it really feels like spring has blossomed.

Up close, these plastic pastorals have the artificial qualities of computer-generated art, but still have the same potency as any oil painting that captures the soft swinging of leaves in the breeze. The iPad works also do something strange to scale. Hockney drew these images on standard-size iPads, but four additional prints have been drastically scaled up. The speckled and pixellated details of nature in the background, matched with the flat lines of colour in the foreground are all part of Hockney's lifelong interest in the construction of perspective.
Dubious whether iPad drawings equal fine art? We recommend a visit to Annely Juda where David Hockney's vibrant colours and instinctive, confident marks will certainly change your mind.
