Günther Förg’s growing reputation as one of Germany’s most important twentieth century artists is largely because of his commitment to a strikingly vivid colour palette within minimalist abstract compositions. It's clear that as a painter, photographer and sculptor, Förg was greatly influenced by American abstract expressionism as well as the European tradition of Art Informel.
Almine Rech Gallery London exhibition
The selection of Grid paintings on show at Almine Rech this summer are a fiercely contemporary reinvention of a small watercolour by Paul Klee from the 1930s, with their liberated block design and interwoven lines of colour. As a student at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich in the 1970s, Förg was fascinated with how the legacy of modernism might be captured in postmodern colour and composition. In these Grids we can see how he managed it, with a fresh and experimental pursuit of ever more dynamic movements of colour across the canvas, frame and gallery walls.
