Justin Mortimer: Kult, Parafin

From the Queen's portrait to crisis in Syria: Justin Mortimer presents new vibrant works of unstable and chaotic modern history at Parafin gallery

Justin Mortimer, Der Besucher, 2014
Justin Mortimer & Queen Elizabeth II
High society portrait painter Justin Mortimer is a name you might recognise as winner of the BP National Portrait Award in 1991. The Slade graduate then had the good fortune to paint Queen Elizabeth II to mark her 50 years as President of the Royal Society, famously separating the monarch's head from her body in a stream of fierce yellow paint. Mortimer has also made portraits of writer Harold Pinter and even superstar David Bowie
Parafin gallery, London exhibition
Parafin stages a new exhibition of work from the British painter that reflects upon modern history with a series of paintings vibrating with social and political unrest. From the Ukraine and Syria, to Afghanistan and the Ebola crisis, Mortimer captures stories from around the world of violence, despair, beauty and hope. Look out for Der Besucher (2014) where sinister figures dressed in Hazchem suits step into the idyllic world of the Swiss mountains. Colours erupt in Mortimer's paintings like flares, interrupting the pictorial space, and giving violent and dramatic scenes a strange vibrancy.
Surreal and unreal, Mortimer's paintings shift nervously in an unstable world where nothing is as it seems
