Black Lives Matter: Adam Pendleton's new work at Pace London takes a stand for African-American rights

Who is artist Adam Pendleton?
Conceptual artist Adam Pendleton returns to Pace London with a new series of work influenced by African-American history, from the Civil Rights Movement to the recent race riots in the US last year. Pendleton is best known for his reinterpretations of history through painting, photography, performance and film.
Pace Gallery exhibition
Step into Pace's outpost in Mayfair and you'll discover Adam Pendleton's Black Lives Matter paintings, an extension of the INDEPENDANCE series in which Pendleton explores the backlash against the horrific deaths of black Americans Trayvon Martin, Eric Garner and 18 year-old Michael Brown by white police officers. INDEPENDANCE is itself a battle cry for the demonstrations that responded to their deaths.
Pendleton has also made a site-specific wall work for the gallery with the phrase BLACK LIVES MATTER etched in enormous letters across the surface, a clear message that seems so simple and yet has not been realised. A sculpture made up of polished steel letters that read BLACK DADA also rests against a wall, with pages of the Black Dada Reader silkscreened across. Suddenly Pendleton's Black Dada paintings become three-dimensional forms with a new impact on the viewer.
This provocative exhibition at Pace London will send tingles down the spine. It's also a fantastic opportunity to see Pendleton's work before it goes on display at the 2015 Venice Biennale this summer.
