Turner Prize nominee Fiona Rae is best known for her colourful abstract paintings with scratched, dragged and daubed brush marks that are highly considered and planned. You might have also heard of the London-based artist as she was included Damien Hirst's Freeze exhibition in 1988 which catapulted the YBAs to stardom.

A painter through and through, Rae has turned her attention to a new series of greyscale works (2014-15) for her exhibition at London's Timothy Taylor Gallery. Each painting is a performance of mark-making which tells the story of a figure who is then denied its existence. Rae teeters on the brink of figuration, but remains in the abstract camp with her dynamic and rigorous system of balancing grey tones. You'll also find a series of small-scale charcoal works at the gallery inspired by the thirteenth-century Nine Dragons by Chen Rong and by American painter Robert Rauschenberg’s Erased de Kooning Drawing (1953). Charcoal is another new venture for Rae as she seeks new ways of representing the figure in her work.
These sumptuous paintings break new ground for Fiona Rae and are worth a visit for those exploring Mayfair's countless contemporary galleries.
