Conrad Shawcross: Three Perpetual Chords, Dulwich Park

After Dulwich Park's much loved Barbara Hepworth statue, Two Forms (Divided Circle) was stolen in 2011, the responsibility fell to Southwark Council and the Contemporary Art Society to commission a new public sculpture. British artist Conrad Shawcross, the youngest living Royal Academician, has taken up the challenge with a new work that explores the western harmonic scale and pays homage to Hepworth's original piece. The Three Perpetual Chords form a path through the north tip of the park, leading visitors from one piece to the next, and emphasise the jarring opposition between industrial material and the lush green space. Shawcross explains the sculptures are 'visual descriptions of musical chords'.

Shawcross, who you might recognise as the creator of the giant dancing robot Ada that frequented the Vinyl Factory Space last year, beat out Anya Galaccio, Ryan Gander and Eva Rothschild to the commission. The illustrious art collector Charles Saatchi is also a big promoter of Shawcross' work. 
Pay a visit to the beautiful Dulwich Village and park this summer, where you can hire pedalos and rowing boats, and of course glimpse Shawcross' new commission in all its glory. You'll also find a new permanent display of Shawcross' work at the Dulwich Picture Gallery.
