AA Bronson life and work
As quirky artists go, AA Bronson is pretty out there - with his own School for Young Shamans andTent of Healing at the Stedelijk Museum in 2013. Aside from his prolific work as an artist, the Canadian born healer is also a respected curator and teacher, directing the Institute for Art, Religion, and Social Justice at Union Theological Seminary in New York City. We can best understand his collaborative work as a journey into magic, sex and spirituality.
General Idea collective
In the 1960s AA Bronson left university to form the free school and commune, General Idea, with friends Felix Partz and Jorge Zontal, both of whom were diagnosed as HIV positive in the 1990s and passed away. The group lived together for 25 years, making living artwork, independently publishing and crafting over 100 exhibitions. Perhaps best known for their magazine FILE (1972 - 89), General Idea were heavily involved in punk, queer theory and AIDS activism.
Maureen Paley exhibition
AA Bronson's show at east London gallery, Maureen Paley, features the never before exhibited Black AIDS painting by General Idea, as well as the Mondo Cane Kama Sutra series where abstract forms morph into canine eroticism. We are particularly intrigued by the new shamanic fortuneteller's tent entitled Treehouse. Further into the show there are a series of 100 queer publications from the mid-seventies onwards, forming an exhibition within an exhibition.
Playful and zany, AA Bronson's exhibition at Maureen Paley is a rollercoaster of experimental ideas.
Private view: Saturday 18 April 6.30 – 8.30pm
AA Bronson will be in-conversation with Emily Pethick at 5 pm
