Elliott Erwitt: Double Platinum, Beetles + Huxley

Beetles + Huxley gallery stage an exhibition of images by the legendary Magnum Photographer Elliott Erwitt, which highlight two seldom-displayed aspects of Erwitt’s work: his large-format platinum prints, and illuminating portraits of the actress Marilyn Monroe.
This photography show also coincides with Erwitt’s receipt of Sony’s Outstanding Contribution to Photography Award, which you can find at the 2015 Sony World Photography Awards in Somerset house.
Platinum Prints
Even if you haven’t heard of Elliott Erwitt, chances are you’ll recognise several of his remarkable photos. From his snapshot of a silhouetted man leaping elegantly in the Paris rain, to his classic image of a stolen kiss in a car in Santa Monica, Elliot Erwitt photographs are renowned for their perfect timing, and their clever visual puns.
Double Platinum spotlights large-format platinum prints of Erwitt’s best-known photos for the first time in the UK. The display also includes several examples of Erwitt’s photojournalism, including one of his earliest and most powerful images of the segregated drinking fountains in North Carolina in the 1950s.
Elliott Erwitt & Marilyn Monroe
Elliott Erwitt photographed Marilyn Monroe throughout the 1950s and 60s, at the height of the Hollywood starlet’s fame. Capturing Monroe at work on film sets and relaxing at home, Erwitt’s images preserve the energy and vitality of the young woman, which so entranced the world.
Don’t miss Erwitt’s iconic snapshot of the moment Marilyn Monroe’s white dress billowed around her on a subway grate, taken during the filming of The Seven Year Itch. Also on display are several never-before-seen colour photos and the original contact sheets from Erwitt’s Monroe shoots.
This is a long overdue return for Erwitt to London, and we can’t wait.
