David Maljkovic, Sprüth Magers
Croatia's biggest name, David Maljkovic, brings his experiments with time and memory to Sprüth Magers London gallery
Who is David Maljkovic?
He’s been labelled as one of Croatia’s most important artists; this year alone David Maljkovic had a show at the Parisian epicentre of contemporary art, Palais de Tokyo, and will soon be appearing at the forthcoming Venice Biennale 2015.
David Maljkovic artist and technique
Maljkovic’s work explores how ideas are affected by technology and time – his interests lie in suspending, slowing or looping time to make us aware of the erosion of memory and the corruption of information. You may know Maljkovic’s images of dilapidated modernist landmarks and buildings, erected during Croatia’s communist era and that now lie empty, which mark the gap between a golden heritage and a disillusioned present.
Sprüth Magers exhibition
You’ll find photo collage, HD video and a single-slide projection at the Sprüth Magers Mayfair, as well as past works that continue Maljkovic’s explorations around memory and amnesia. Through large installation shots of the David Maljkovic Palais de Tokyo show, the Sprüth Magers gallery becomes an extension of the Parisian museum, interrupting the viewer’s sense of coherence.
