No Set Rules, Ben Uri Gallery

London's Ben Uri Gallery is known for pulling off some of the most exciting shows in British art, and sharp-tongued art critic Brian Sewell has loudly praised the museum, saying in New York it would probably have its own skyscraper by now.

This spring the north London gallery turns its attention to a display from the Philip Schlee collection of drawings, prints and paintings by artists working in Britain between 1920 and 2004. Expect to find Frank Auerbach, David Bomberg, Gillian Ayres, David Hockney, Henry Moore and Graham Sutherland all featured in this show, covering a vast period of 20th century history. Moving across all manners of subjects and techniques, this exhibition sways between the movements towards abstraction and figuration which marked 100 years of expression on paper. These 49 works by 37 artists are also designed to spark debate, showing that paper works are not always about the sharp mark making of pencil, they can also be expressive sweeps of colour.
As David Hockney once said, “there are no set rules in drawing” - so expect a full force rebellion at this hidden gem in north london.
