Artist Amedeo Modigliani is one of the most popular modern Italian painters, but he worked for the most part in France, where he rubbed shoulders with Pablo Picasso, Constantin Brâncuşi and other avant-garde artists. Never particularly successful during his lifetime, Modigliani died aged just 35 of tubercular meningitis.
