'My Bed' Late at Tate, Tate Britain
The next Tate Late, April 2016, gives 15-25 year olds a new perspective on Tracey Emin's 'My Bed'

The Tate Britain, once at the stuffier end of London museums, has undergone a bit of an image make-over of late. One result is the brilliant Tate Lates series: evenings of performances, events and workshops for 15-25 year olds at the Tate Britain, London. Pop down on a Friday night after work with some friends, grab a beer and get inspired by the Tate Collection after dark. A perfect start to the weekend.
The next Late at Tate Britain event on April 1 is based around Tracey Emin's My Bed. The work is probably one of the best known Turner prize nominations (1999) in recent years, and rocketed Emin to stardom; especially after her notorious drunken Channel 4 appearance. Strewn with stained sheets, condoms, underwear and alcohol bottles, Emin made the infamous bed while she was living in a Waterloo council flat after a traumatic breakup. This work, made at the very start of the YBA (Young British Artists) era, caused outrage - how could this mess possibly be art? And yet, the work seethes with raw emotional power. It has become a true British icon.
Tate Collective have arranged a series of live acts from 'bedroom musicians' such as Vauxhall based producer Pokovsky with 404 a London-based, collective mixing dreamy vocals with lackadaisical instrumentation. Two spoken word poets, Travis Alabanza and Liv Wynter will respond to the themes of confession, abuse and gender of My Bed. There'll be a gender debate courtesy of sex education collective Bedfellows, and a Zine-making workshop to boot.
