The last time acclaimed American artist Michelle Stuart exhibited in London was 1979 at the ICA, when she was considered to be a leading figure in the Land art movement. Now she's back at Parafin gallery, with an exhibition that brings together Land art, drawing and sculpture.

If you aren't familiar with her, Stuart has exhibited at some world famous venues including MoMA, New York, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, the National Gallery of Art, Washington, the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Tate Liverpool.

Back in the day, Stuart was known for her large-scale site specific works in the landscape that incorporated earth, rock, and found objects into her sculptural installations. You might remember her enormous 12-foot scrolls covered in intricate markings and rubbings, or even more famously the 460-foot scroll in 1975 which she smashed rocks against before unrolling the paper over the cliff where Niagara Falls was situated 12,000 years ago.
She has also always been a fervent photographer, an aspect which takes centre stage in this new exhibition. Recent photographs from her travels across the US, Europe, the mountains of Machu Picchu and oceans of Polynesia are blended with the studio to create complex grids that connect images and places in a grand narrative through time and space. You'll also find the defining works of her career like her drawings, earth rubbings and book-objects, which connect these recent work back to Stuart's origins.
