You might have heard of the journalist and TV critic Clive James, but did you know his daughter is a contemporary artist to watch? After graduating from Slade School of Art, Claerwen James was immediately snapped up by Flowers Gallery and has since been bought by celebrity collectors Ian McEwan and Oscar winning actress Cate Blanchett.

Artist Claerwen James’s haunting portraits of young female subjects are curious snapshots of childhood and private life. Working from photographs, film stills and cuttings form magazines, James revels in the distance between herself and the sitter, embracing the potent loneliness that seems to radiate from her work. Potent and still, her paintings are self-contained and hint at a much deeper narrative.
