Wellington: Triumphs, Politics and Passions, National Portrait Gallery

To mark the Battle of Waterloo 200th anniversary, the National Portrait Gallery, London unveils a collection of paintings of Arthur Wellesley, 1^st Duke of Wellington who triumphed over Napoleon on the 18^th June 1815.

The show explores the Duke’s long and illustrious career, from highly decorated military service to politics and his private life. Triumphs, Politics and Passions investigates how contemporary 19^th century art played a part in celebrating Wellington’s military success and paved the way for him to become a lasting significant figure in British history.

Look out for the famous Thomas Lawrence painting of Wellington created shortly after the Battle of Waterloo and early photography by Antoine Claudet. You’ll also want to spend time with the Francisco Goya portrait, begun in 1812 and later modified to include the Duke’s later awards. And of course the longest portrait in the National Portrait Gallery collection is also making an appearance, an enormous 67 foot view of the Duke of Wellington's Funeral (1853) by Samuel Henry Gordon Alken and George Augustus Sala.
