Bear Witness, Sotheby's

From Rothko to coke cans: new Sotheby’s Bear Witness exhibition prepares to sell contemporary art objects and extraordinary artefacts

Bear Witness 10 - 12 March 2015
From the kitsch to the classical, to the contemporary and beyond – Bear Witness has it in spades. Head down to the Sotheby’s London exhibition where you’ll be dazzled by the numerous contemporary art objects and curious artefacts amassed by a single collector through decades of travel. So vast is the display that all 18,000 feet of Sotheby’s New Bond Street premises are crammed full of the weird and wonderful ahead of three separate auctions.

The bizarre melange of objects, from post-war masters like Rothko, Warhol and Hirst, and Renaissance marble skulls to 19th century theatrical props, are linked by two symbolic motifs: the bear and the skull. The bear is a totem of power, strength and life, while the skull is a reminder of our own mortality – and there’s separate auctions dedicated to both.
Alex Branczik, Sotheby’s Head of Contemporary Art, London, has described the collection as a modern day Wunderkammer
saying its, “Quite possibly the most extraordinary exhibition Sotheby’s has staged in its 270-year history…. When else will you see Sotheby’s selling a Rothko in the same auction as a can of coke?” With prices from £20 to £2,000,000 you’ll find everything from the affordable to the outrageous at Sotheby’s London Auction House
